Senior Manager, Engineering (Container Product Engineering)

Chainguard  ·  United States - Remote

About the role

Leads the team of about fifteen engineers that builds Chainguard Containers, the company's core product of hardened container images, plus the registry that distributes them and the tooling that helps engineers and AI agents switch to them. The senior manager's boss is the VP of Engineering responsible for Containers, Libraries, and Repositories, and the role is on the Director track.

The team owns customer-facing features such as pushing customer images to the registry, Custom Assembly, Helm charts and STIG compliance dashboards; the pipeline that turns Wolfi packages into signed, attested images at scale; registry performance work such as lazy loading and Sigstore signing; and adoption tools including Dockerfile migration and MCP servers that let agents find and pull images. The manager sets goals, organises the team into small sub-teams with clear ownership, coaches a senior group that includes Staff and Principal engineers, hires, and handles underperformance early. They partner with product managers and a TPM on requirements, hold the technical bar through design and code review, lead the team's move to agentic coding with proper guardrails, and own planning, headcount and delivery dates.

Chainguard wants ten or more years in software engineering, five or more managing engineers on products sold to customers, experience leading Staff and Principal engineers in a group of at least ten, and a record of shipping to paying customers in a hyper-growth company. Fluency with containers, registries and the OCI image format, Kubernetes, Go services and GCP or AWS is expected, along with daily use of agentic coding tools. The role is remote, with North America or the UK preferred.
